Who We Help

The primary goal of The Garden & Greenhouse Project is to assist people with significant intellectual and physical disabilities in a meaningful activity that will produce income for themselves as well as facilitate community integration with normally developing neighbors.  The program’s objectives are as follows:

  • Promote the independence of individuals through structured choice, community integration, and the enhancement of socialization skills, as evidenced by positive progress on each individual’s person-centered treatment plan.
  • Provide individuals with training and job skills that will eventually allow them to locate and maintain jobs in the private sector, as evidenced by progress in soft skills in the individual’s treatment plans.

History of The Garden & Greenhouse Project

In the spring of 2015, Thrive Upstate joined forces with the nonprofit agency Generous Garden (as it was winding down its operations) to expand employment, training, and socialization opportunities for the individuals with disabilities we serve. The Generous Garden Project cultivates, grows, and harvests vegetables, plants, flowers, and trees to be used or sold throughout the County of Greenville and Upstate South Carolina. Plantings are seasonal, and produce, seedlings, plants, and hand-made growing pots and crafts are made available to the community throughout the year. Individuals served by Thrive Upstate benefit from horticultural therapy – working in the garden, enjoying the produce and plants they grow, and earning a wage as the produce is sold in the community to pay the wages of individuals with disabilities working in the program.
